Country Opera

Maurice the Rooster is an opera for ten performers, including musicians, with a minimalist set. This show can be staged in various locations – village square, garden, farmyard, beach, community hall – always on an intimate scale. The different characters will be played by three singers, accompanied by seven musicians, and the audience will be in full, joyful complicity, not easily fooled, but happy to be "told stories."

In this rural opera, the setting is unfolding in the countryside, the love unexpected, the tone decidedly whimsical, and the themes, while very topical, are less innocuous than they initially appear. The libretto draws inspiration from the animal repertoire, the Roman de Renart, and La Fontaine's fables, with nods to the commedia dell'arte and medieval traveling players. Here, at last, is an opera for everyone, recounting the legal and romantic adventures of Maurice the Rooster, a true French symbol who fights for his freedom to... sing!
